Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler says Monday was not an easy day as he watched a veteran officer turn in his badge.
"Just shortly after he was in Magistrate Court, he came into my office and we talked and he turned in his letter of resignation."
Forty-year old Micah Feltner, a 13 year veteran of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department, was arrested and charged with two counts of fraudulent schemes. Both are felonies.
According to investigators, Feltner, who was also a member of the Oak Hill Volunteer Fire Department and a one time president of that organization, overbilled the city for hours firefighters spent responding to emergency calls.
He allegedly pocketed the extra cash totaling at least $375,000 over a six year period.
Sheriff Kessler says, while what Feltner is charged with has nothing to do with his work at the Sheriff's Department, it goes to his honesty and integrity as an officer.
"It is what it is and he has to be held accountable because he's held to a high standard." Kessler says, no matter how detached Feltner's actions were from his job as a deputy, the Sheriff believes it still casts a long shadow on his department.
"It's like any other thing, any business. You have someone do something wrong it reflects badly on your agency."
