New Scouting Center Unveiled

Stephen Bechtel, Jr.

The Boy Scouts of America unveiled the organization's fourth high-adventure base camp Wednesday in Glen Jean.  The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve will be built on a 10,000 acre site in Fayette County.  The site is situated in the New River Gorge region and borders more than 70,000 acres of the National Parks Service.

Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr earned his Eagle Scout award in 1940 and described his $50 million gift to the BSA as a way of "expanding and enhancing the reach of Scouting."  He stated that Scouting is "more relevant today than ever."

The new center will provide white water rafting, mountain biking, technical rock climbing and hiking.  The adventure base camp is expected to attract up to 50,000 scouts throughout the year.  In 2013, the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve also becomes the permanent home of the National Scout Jamboree, an event that attracts 40,000 Scouts and another 200,000 visitors during a 10-day period.  National Jamborees are held every four years.
